A Great Start to the Year

From the Principal

Dear all,

Welcome back to a new school year. We have had a truly wonderful start!

On August 18th I said 'Good Morning Students' for the very first time to 93 new Grade 4 students. The very same day the staff and I welcomed back 470 students in grade 5-9. It is IESH tradition to start the year with two mentor days. These days are for routines, reminders and for building new teams. The staff worked hard to plan and execute the mentor days. Well done!

Since those first couple of days, so much has happened at the school. The students have already had several checkpoints to show their teachers that they are meeting the high academic standards that we have for them. Checkpoints, tests and homework are great tools the teachers use to identify students that need an extra challenge and in order to ensure that all students fulfill their potential.

Students, please remember that you can always go to tutorials (extra classes) in the afternoons to get help with homework or get that extra challenge you want and need.

Our new students have settled in well and so have the new staff. When I greet the students by the main entrance in the mornings, or when I walk through the corridors and out on the playground I see staff, old and new, spending that crucial time getting to know the students. Creating strong staff-student relationships has always been part of who we are in IES and I am proud to see the effort the staff is putting in to make this reality in IES Hässelby.

Last week during Sport's Week the four Houses competed in outdoor sports' activities as well as designing posters and writing new chants resulting in a House parade around the school. This year there will be more frequent House events. Students earn points to their House in each event. At the end of the year, we will have a winning House. There will be prizes of course.

Speaking about prizes, two weeks ago I was at the annual IES Principals' Quality Conference. IES Hässelby received six trophies for the outstanding academic achievements our students had in the National Tests last academic year. Two examples: Best IES School on Academic Progress, and The Barbara Bergström Award for Best Overall Academic Achievement. To get such a recognition for the hard work our staff and students do every day is something special and something worth celebrating!
